“Thus We made them known, so that they might know that Allah’s promise is true and that there is no doubt about the Hour—when they disputed among themselves concerning their case. They said, ‘Build a structure over them; their Lord knows them best.’ Those who prevailed in the matter said, ‘We shall certainly build a mosque over them.’” (21)

“Indeed, if they discover you”: that is, if they learn of your whereabouts, “they will stone you.” Ibn Jurayj said: they will revile you and harm you with their words. It was also said: they will kill you. And it was said: execution by stoning was among their customary practices, and it is the most vile form of killing. It was also said: they will beat you.

“Or force you back into their religion”: that is, into disbelief. “And then you will never prosper”: if you return to it.

His saying, exalted is He, “Thus We made them known”: that is, We disclosed them. One says, “I came upon a thing,” when one becomes aware of it; and, “I caused another to come upon it,” meaning, I made him aware of it.

“So that they might know that Allah’s promise is true”: referring to the people of Baydarus (1), who denied the resurrection. “And that there is no doubt about the Hour—when they disputed among themselves concerning their case.” Ibn Abbas said:
