Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

Surah al-Kahf (The Cave): 110 verses. 215/A It is Meccan.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.

“Praise be to Allah, who has sent down the Book to His servant and has not made it crooked; [rather, He made it] upright, to warn of severe punishment from Him and to give glad tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they shall have an excellent reward.” (1–2)

“Praise be to Allah, who has sent down the Book to His servant.” Allah (1) praises Himself for His favor upon His creation. He singled out His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, for mention because the sending down of the Quran to him was a favor bestowed particularly upon him, and upon all other people generally.

“And has not made it crooked—upright.” This involves an inversion in word order, its meaning being: He sent down the Book to His servant, making it upright, and He did not make it crooked. “Upright” means straight. Ibn Abbas said: “Just.” Al-Farra said: “[It is] upright over all the Scriptures,” meaning: confirming them and abrogating their laws.

Qatadah said: It does not involve an inversion in word order. Rather, its meaning is: He sent down the Book to His servant and did not make it crooked; instead, He made it upright. Nor was it inconsistent, as Allah, Exalted is He, says: “Had it been from anyone other than Allah, they would have found much inconsistency in it.” (Quran 4:82)

It was also said that its meaning is: He did not make it created. It is related from Ibn Abbas regarding His words, “an Arabic Quran, free of all crookedness” (Quran 39:28), that is: not created.

“To warn of severe punishment,” that is, to warn of a severe punishment, “from Him,” that is, from His presence; “and to give glad tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they shall have an excellent reward,” namely, Paradise.
