Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

connected to what follows—namely, His words: “So remember Me; I will remember you.” Its meaning is: Just as We sent among you a messenger from among yourselves, remember Me. (1) This verse addresses the people of Makkah and the Arabs: just as We sent among you, O community of Arabs,

“a messenger from among yourselves,” meaning Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, “reciting to you Our verses,” meaning the Quran, “purifying you, and teaching you the Book and wisdom.” It was said that wisdom means the sunnah; and it was also said that it means the Quran’s admonitions. “And teaching you what you did not know”: namely, the rulings and laws of Islam.

“So remember Me; I will remember you. Give thanks to Me and do not be ungrateful to Me. (152)”

“So remember Me; I will remember you.” Ibn ‘Abbas said: “Remember Me through obedience to Me, and I will remember you through My forgiveness.” Sa‘id ibn Jubayr said: “Remember Me in ease and prosperity, and I will remember you in hardship and affliction.” This is demonstrated by His words: “Had he not been among those who glorified Allah, he would have remained in its belly until the Day they are resurrected” (144—al-Saffat).

‘Abd al-Wahid ibn Ahmad al-Mulayhi informed us; Ahmad ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Na‘imi informed us; Muhammad ibn Yusuf informed us; Muhammad ibn Isma‘il informed us; ‘Umar ibn Hafs informed us; my father informed us; al-A‘mash informed us. He said: I heard Abu Salih narrate from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said that Allah Most High says: “I am as My servant expects Me to be, and I am with him when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me to himself, I remember him to Myself; and if he remembers Me in an assembly, I remember him in an assembly better than theirs. If he draws near to Me by a handspan, I draw near to him by a cubit; if he draws near to Me by a cubit, I draw near to him by a fathom; and whoever comes to Me walking, I come to him running.” (2)

The Imam Abu ‘Ali al-Husayn ibn Muhammad ibn al-Qadi informed us, and Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Abi Tawbah al-Kushmihi narrated to us. He said: Abu al-‘Abbas Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Siraj al-Tahhan narrated to us; Abu Ahmad Muhammad ibn Quraysh ibn Sulayman informed us; Abu ‘Abd al-Malik al-Dimashqi informed us; Sulayman ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman informed us; Mundhir ibn Ziyad narrated from Sakhr ibn Juwayriyah, from al-Hasan, from Anas, who said: “I heard this hadith from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, as many times as these ten fingers.” The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Allah Most High says: O son of Adam, if you remember Me to yourself, I remember you to Myself; if you remember Me in an assembly, I remember you in an assembly better than theirs. If you draw near to Me by a handspan, I draw near to you by a cubit; if you draw near to Me by a cubit, I draw near to you by a fathom; if you walk toward Me, I run toward you; if you run toward Me, I hasten toward you. If you ask Me, I give to you; and if you do not ask Me, I become angry with you.” (3)
