Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

“With the truth We have sent it down, and with the truth it has come down. And We have sent you only as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner. (105) And it is a Quran which We have divided, so that you may recite it to the people at a measured pace; and We have sent it down progressively. (106)”

“Then he sought to drive them out”—that is, Pharaoh sought to drive Moses and the Children of Israel out—“from the land,” meaning the land of Egypt. “So We drowned him and all those with him,” and We saved Moses and his people.

“And after him We said”—that is, after Pharaoh’s destruction—“to the Children of Israel: Dwell in the land,” meaning the lands of Egypt and Syria. “Then, when the promise of the Hereafter comes to pass,” meaning the Day of Resurrection, “We shall bring you forth all together”: that is, all of you to the place of standing on the Day of Resurrection. A mingled multitude is a large gathering whose people are mixed together from every kind. It is said, “The armies became intermingled,” when they mixed together. The gathering on the Day of Resurrection will be like this: among them will be the believer and the disbeliever, the righteous and the wicked.

Al-Kalbi said: “When the promise of the Hereafter comes to pass” means the descent of Jesus from heaven. “We shall bring you forth all together” means those drawn from every people, from here and there, gathered all together. (1)

His saying, exalted is He: “With the truth We have sent it down, and with the truth it has come down,” refers to the Quran. “And We have sent you only as a bearer of glad tidings” to those who obey, “and a warner” to those who disobey.

“And it is a Quran which We have divided”: it was said that this means that We sent it down in portions, rather than sending it down all at once, as indicated by Ibn Abbas’s reading: “And a Quran We have sent down in portions,” with an intensified form of the verb. The common reading, however, has the un-intensified form, meaning: We have expounded it in detail. It was also said that it means: We have made it clear. Al-Hasan said: It means that by it We distinguished between truth and falsehood. “So that you may recite it to the people at a measured pace,” that is, with deliberation, measured recitation, (2) and unhurried delivery over
