units of prayer, concluding every two units with the salām, then performing Witr with one unit. He would remain in prostration for as long as it would take one of you to recite fifty verses before raising his head. When the muezzin had finished the dawn adhan and dawn had become clear to him, he would rise and pray two light units, then lie down on his right side until the muezzin came to him for the commencement of the prayer, whereupon he would go out.” Some narrators’ reports contain additions not found in others. Ahmad ibn Abd Allah al-Salihi informed us; Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Hiri informed us; Hajib ibn Ahmad al-Tusi informed us; Abd al-Rahman ibn Munib informed us; Yazid ibn Harun informed us; Humayd al-Tawil informed us, from Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: “Whenever we wished to see the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, praying at night, we would see him; and whenever we wished to see him sleeping, we would see him.” He also said: “He would fast during a month until we would say, ‘He will not break his fast at all during it,’ and he would refrain from fasting until we would say, ‘He will not fast at all during it.’” (2)
Allah, Exalted is He, says: “Perhaps your Lord will raise you to a praised station.” When used of Allah Most High, “perhaps” denotes certainty, for He does not hold out to His servants the hope that He will give them—or do for them—what He will not give or do.
The praised station is the station of intercession on behalf of his ummah, for at it he will be praised by the first and the last. Abd al-Wahid ibn Ahmad al-Malihi informed us; Abu Mansur Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Samʿan informed us; Abu Jaʿfar Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abd al-Jabbar al-Rayani informed us; Humayd ibn Zanjawayh related to us; Abd Allah ibn Yazid al-Muqri informed us; Haywah informed us, from Kaʿb, from Alqamah, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Jubayr, from Abd Allah ibn Amr ibn al-As, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “When you hear the muezzin, repeat what he says. Then invoke blessings upon me, for whoever invokes blessings upon me once, Allah will bless him tenfold thereby. Then ask Allah to grant me the Wasilah—the highest rank—for it is a station in Paradise that is fitting for only one of Allah’s servants, and I hope that I will be that servant. Whoever asks for the Wasilah for me will be granted my intercession.” (3)
Abd al-Wahid al-Malihi informed us; Ahmad ibn Abd Allah al-Nuʿaymi informed us; Muhammad ibn Yusuf informed us; Muhammad ibn Ismaʿil related to us; Ali ibn Abbas related to us; Saʿid ibn Abi Hamzah related to us, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jabir ibn Abd Allah, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Whoever says, upon hearing the call: ‘O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and the prayer about to be established, grant Muhammad the Wasilah and distinction, and raise him to the praised station that You have promised him,’ my intercession will become due for him on the Day of Resurrection.” (4)
