Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

“And when hardship touches you at sea, all those whom you invoke vanish from your thoughts except Him. But when He delivers you safely to land, you turn away; and man is ever ungrateful. (67) Do you then feel secure that He will not cause the earth to swallow you up on the landward side, or send against you a storm of stones, whereupon you would find no protector for yourselves? (68) Or do you feel secure that He will not return you to it another time, then send against you a violent wind and drown you for your disbelief? Then you would find no one to pursue a claim against Us on your behalf. (69)”

His saying, “Indeed, as for My servants, you have no authority over them. And sufficient is your Lord as a Guardian,” means: a Protector for whoever entrusts his affair to Him.

His saying, “Your Lord is the One who drives the ships for you,” means: He propels and sets the ships in motion for you, “across the sea, so that you may seek of His bounty”—that is, so that you may seek His provision—“for He is ever Merciful to you.”

“And when hardship touches you”—that is, distress and the fear of drowning—“at sea, all those whom you invoke vanish,” meaning, they become null and fall away: “those deities whom you invoke, except Him,” that is, except Allah. Thus, you find no rescuer other than Him. “But when He delivers you”—when He answers your supplication, saves you from the terrors of the sea, and brings you out—“safely to land, you turn away” from faith, sincerity, and obedience, out of your ingratitude for His blessings. “And man is ever ungrateful.”

“Do you then feel secure,” after that, “that He will cause the earth to swallow you up on the landward side”—that is, in a region of land, namely the earth—“or send against you a storm of stones?” That is, that He rain stones upon you from the sky, as He rained them upon the people of Lot. Abu Ubaydah and al-Qutaybi said: A storm of stones is a wind that hurls small pebbles, namely little stones. “Then you would find no protector for yourselves.” Qatadah said: that is, no one to prevent it.

“Or do you feel secure that He will return you to it,” meaning, to the sea, “another time, then send against you a violent wind?” Ibn Abbas said: that is, a raging wind, which is a fierce wind.

Abu Ubaydah said: It is the wind that smashes everything—that is, pulverizes and shatters it.

Al-Qutaybi said: It is that which breaks the trees—that is, fractures them.
