His saying, exalted is He: “Nothing has prevented Us from sending the signs except that the former peoples denied them.”
Ibn Abbas said: The people of Mecca asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, to turn al-Safa into gold for them and to remove the mountains from around them so that they could cultivate the land. Allah, exalted is He, then revealed to His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him: “If You wish, I will grant them respite; and if You wish, I will give them what they have asked for. But if they still do not believe, I will destroy them just as I destroyed the nations before them.”
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “No; rather, grant them respite.” Then Allah, exalted is He, revealed:

Al-Suyuti additionally attributed it to al-Bazzar, Ibn al-Mundhir, al-Tabarani, Ibn Mardawayh, al-Bayhaqi in al-Dalail, and al-Diya in al-Mukhtarah. Al-Haythami said, “Its narrators are those of the Sahih,” and Shaykh Ahmad Shakir graded it authentic in his commentary on al-Musnad, no. 2333. قَوْلُهُ ﷿: ﴿وَمَا مَنَعَنَا أَنْ نُرْسِلَ بِالْآيَاتِ إِلَّا أَنْ كَذَّبَ بِهَا الْأَوَّلُونَ﴾ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: سَأَلَ أَهْلُ مَكَّةَ [رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ] (١) أَنْ يَجْعَلَ لَهُمُ الصَّفَا ذَهَبًا وَأَنْ يُنَحِّيَ الْجِبَالَ عَنْهُمْ فَيَزْرَعُوا فَأَوْحَى اللَّهُ تَعَالَى إِلَى رَسُولِهِ ﷺ: إِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْ أَسَتَأْنِيَ بِهِمْ فَعَلْتُ وَإِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْ أُوتِيهِمْ ما سألوا ٢١٠/ب فَعَلْتُ فَإِنْ لَمْ يُؤْمِنُوا أَهْلَكْتُهُمْ كَمَا أَهْلَكْتُ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَهُمْ [مِنَ الْأُمَمِ] (٢) فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: "لَا بَلْ تَسْتَأْنِي بِهِمْ" فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ ﷿ (٣)
