Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

John and Jesus, who were maternal cousins. He said, “This is John and Jesus, so greet them.” I greeted them, and they returned the greeting. Then they said, “Welcome to the righteous brother and the righteous Prophet.”

Then he ascended with me to the third heaven and sought entry. It was asked, “Who is this?” He replied, “Gabriel.” It was asked, “Who is with you?” He replied, “Muhammad.” It was asked, “Has he been sent as a messenger?” He replied, “Yes.” It was said, “Welcome to him; what an excellent arrival he has made!” Then it was opened. When I had passed through, there was Joseph, who had been given half of all beauty. He said, “This is Joseph, so greet him.” I greeted him, and he returned the greeting. Then he said, “Welcome to the righteous brother and the righteous Prophet.”

Then he ascended with me until he came to the fourth heaven and sought entry. When I had passed through, there was Idris. He said, “This is Idris, so greet him.” I greeted him, and he returned the greeting. Then he said, “Welcome to the righteous brother and the righteous Prophet.”

Then he ascended with me until he came to the fifth heaven and sought entry. It was asked, “Who is this?” He replied, “Gabriel.” It was asked, “Who is with you?” He replied, “Muhammad.” It was asked, “Has he been sent as a messenger?” He replied, “Yes.” It was said, “Welcome to him; what an excellent arrival he has made!” When I had passed through, there was Aaron. He said, “This is Aaron, so greet him.” I greeted him, and he returned the greeting. Then he said, “Welcome to the righteous brother and the righteous Prophet.”

Then he ascended with me until he came to the sixth heaven and sought entry. It was asked, “Who is this?” He replied, “Gabriel.” It was asked, “Who is with you?” He replied, “Muhammad.” It was asked, “Has he been sent as a messenger?” He replied, “Yes.” It was said, “Welcome to him; what an excellent arrival he has made!” When I had passed through, there was Moses. He said, “This is Moses, so greet him.” I greeted him, and he returned the greeting. Then he said, “Welcome to the righteous Prophet and the righteous brother.” When I passed beyond him, he wept. He was asked, “What makes you weep?” He replied, “I weep because a young man sent after me will have more members of his community enter Paradise than will enter it from my community.” (1)

Then he ascended with me to the seventh heaven, and Gabriel sought entry. It was asked, “Who is this?” Gabriel replied, “Gabriel.” It was asked, “Who is with you?” He replied, “Muhammad.” It was asked, “Has he been sent as a messenger?” He replied, “Yes.” It was said, “Welcome to him; what an excellent arrival he has made!” When I had passed through, there was Abraham. He said, “This is your father Abraham, so greet him.” I greeted him, and he returned the greeting. Then he said, “Welcome to the righteous Prophet and the righteous son.” Then al-Bayt al-Ma'mur was raised up for me, and I asked Gabriel about it. He said, “This is al-Bayt al-Ma'mur. Seventy thousand angels pray therein every day; once they leave, they never return to it for as long as they remain.”

(1) The scholars said: Moses’s weeping was not out of envy—God forbid—for envy is removed from every individual believer in that realm, let alone one whom Allah Most High has chosen. Rather, it was sorrow over the reward he had missed: the elevation in rank resulting from the many followers, which was diminished by his community’s frequent disobedience, since this reduced their rewards and, consequently, his own reward. Every prophet receives the equivalent of the reward of each person who follows him. Thus, despite their much longer period in comparison to this community, fewer members of his community followed him than followed our Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.
