Gabriel descended and opened my chest, then washed it with the water of Zamzam. He then brought a basin of gold filled with wisdom and faith, poured it into my chest, and then sealed it shut.”

(1) When a hadith has two or more chains of transmission, hadith scholars write the symbol (h) when moving from one chain to another. It is a single undotted ha, indicating a transfer from one chain to another. Some say that, upon reaching it, one should say “hadith”; others say that, when reaching it while reading, one should say “ha” and continue. Al-Hafiz Abd al-Qadir al-Rahawi held that it is the ha of ha'il (a separator), meaning that it separates the two chains. He said that nothing should be pronounced upon reaching it in reading, and rejected the view that it derives from “hadith,” among other opinions. Ibn al-Salah preferred that the reader say “ha” upon reaching it and continue, as this is the safest and most balanced view. See Ulum al-Hadith by Ibn al-Salah, pp. 203-204, ed. Dr Nur al-Din Itr. (2) The text within the parentheses is omitted in manuscript B. (3) When a narrator relates a hadith from two or more shaykhs and their wordings differ, it is permissible to combine the wording from all of them into a single narrative—as the author has done here—and relate the hadith in full. The hadith authorities have accepted this practice. The author has clarified the additions and omissions found in each narration. See al-Baith al-Hathith by Ibn Kathir, pp. 123-124; Fath al-Bari by Ibn Hajar, 8:456-457. (4) The text within the parentheses is omitted in manuscript B.
