Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

Al-Hasan said: It is contentment.

Muqatil ibn Hayyan said: It means living in obedience to Allah.

Abu Bakr al-Warraq said: It is the sweetness of obedience.

Mujahid and Qatadah said: It is Paradise. Awf also related this from al-Hasan, who said: No one’s life is truly pleasant except in Paradise. (1)

“And We shall surely reward them according to the best of what they used to do.”

“So when you recite the Quran, seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed.” (98)

Regarding His saying, exalted is He, “So when you recite the Quran”: that is, when you intend to recite the Quran, “seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed”—just as He, exalted is He, says: “When you rise for prayer, wash...” (al-Ma'idah, 6).

Seeking refuge in Allah is sunnah when reciting the Quran. (2)

Most scholars hold that seeking refuge is to be done before the recitation. (3)

Abu Hurayrah said: After it. (4)

(1) After citing the reports concerning the interpretation of the verse, al-Tabari said: “The soundest view is that of those who interpret it as: ‘We shall surely grant him a good life’ through contentment. For when Allah makes a person content with the provision apportioned to him, he does not exhaust himself in pursuit of worldly gain, his toil therein is not excessive, and his life is not troubled by chasing what he has missed of it or coveting what he may never attain. As for the view narrated from Ibn Abbas, that it means lawful provision, it may bear the meaning we have mentioned: namely, that Allah makes him content in this world with the lawful provision He grants him, even if it is little, so that he does not desire an abundance of it from unlawful sources. It does not mean that Allah grants him an abundance of lawful provision. Indeed, we have not seen that most of those who perform deeds pleasing to Allah have been granted abundant lawful provision in this world; rather, we have found constricted circumstances more common among them than ease.” See Tafsir al-Tabari, 14:172. (2) Al-Tabari said, 14:173: “His saying, ‘fasta'idh billahi min al-shaytan al-rajim’ (seek refuge in Allah from Satan the accursed), is not a binding command; rather, it is an instruction and a recommendation. There is unanimous agreement that one who recites the Quran without seeking refuge in Allah from Satan the accursed, whether before or after his recitation, has not neglected an obligatory duty.” Ibn al-Jawzi said in Zad al-Masir, 4:490: “Seeking refuge when reciting is Sunnah, both in prayer and otherwise.” Ibn Atiyyah said, 8:507: “Al-Naqqash related from Ata that seeking refuge is obligatory.” See Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 1:15 and 2:587; al-Majmu by al-Nawawi, 3:284; and al-Tibyan fi Adab Hamalat al-Quran by al-Nawawi, pp. 64-65. (3) See Tafsir al-Tabari, 14:173; Tafsir al-Qurtubi, 10:174-175; al-Muharrar al-Wajiz, 8:507; and Ahkam al-Quran by Ibn al-Arabi, 3:1175. (4) Al-Nawawi relates in al-Majmu, 3:284, that this view was held by Abu Hurayrah, Ibn Sirin, and al-Nakha'i. Abu Hurayrah would seek refuge after completing al-Fatihah, based on the apparent meaning of the verse. The correct view, however, is the first one: that it should be done before recitation, due to the hadiths indicating that it precedes the recitation. See Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 1:13-15 and 2:587; and Ahkam al-Quran by Ibn al-Arabi, 3:1175.
