Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

Mas'ud.” (1) That was because they killed him.

“One God” is in the accusative as an appositive of “your God.” It is also said to mean: “We acknowledge Him as one God.” “And to Him we submit.”

“That was a community”—that is, a group—“which has passed away,” meaning, has gone by. “It will have what it earned” in deeds; “and you will have what you earned, and you will not be questioned about what they used to do.” That is, each person will be questioned about his own deeds, not those of another.

(1) Ibn Abi Shaybah relates in the section on military campaigns of his Musannaf, 14:480-484: Sulayman ibn Harb narrated to us; Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Ayyub, from Ikrimah, who said: “When the Messenger of Allah made a truce with the people of Mecca ...” He then said: “Al-Abbas set out, mounted the Prophet’s white mule, and went to Quraysh to call them to Allah. When he was delayed, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, ‘Bring back my father to me, for a man’s paternal uncle is like his father; I fear that they may do something to him ...’” See Ibn Hajar, al-Kafi al-Shaf, pp. 11-12.
