and Surat al-Nahl, Surat al-Naml, and Surat al-Ankabut. They would gather and say mockingly, “This is in (1) Surat al-Baqarah; this is in Surat al-Nahl; and this is in Surat al-Ankabut.” (2) Thereupon Allah Most High revealed:
“Indeed, We know that your heart is distressed by what they say. So glorify the praises of your Lord and be among those who prostrate themselves. And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty.”
“Indeed, We know that your heart is distressed by what they say (97). So glorify the praises of your Lord and be among those who prostrate themselves (98). And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty (99).”
Regarding His saying, “So glorify the praises of your Lord,” Ibn Abbas said: “Pray at your Lord’s command.” And regarding, “and be among those who prostrate themselves,” ⦗198/b⦘ he said: “Among those who pray (3), the humble.”
Al-Dahhak said: “So glorify the praises of your Lord” means: Say, “Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him”; and “be among those who prostrate themselves” means those who pray.
It is related that whenever a matter troubled the Messenger of Allah, he would turn to prayer. (4)
“And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty”: that is, death, whose coming is certain. This is the meaning of what is mentioned in Surat Maryam: “He has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah as long as I live.”
Al-Mutahhar ibn Ali al-Farisi informed us; Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Salihi informed us; Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Jafar, Abu al-Shaykh the hadith master, informed us; Umayyah ibn Muhammad al-Sawwaf al-Basri narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Azdi narrated to us; his father and al-Haytham ibn Kharijah narrated to us, saying: Ismail ibn Ayyash narrated to us, from Shurahbil ibn Muslim, from Abu Muslim al-Khawlani, from Jubayr ibn Nufayr, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah said, “It was not revealed to me that I should amass wealth and become one of the merchants. Rather, it was revealed to me: ‘Glorify the praises of your Lord, be among those who prostrate themselves, and worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty.’” (5)
