Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

“And We have certainly placed constellations in the heaven and adorned it for those who look.” (16)

“They would surely say, ‘Our eyes have only been closed off.’” Ibn Abbas said: “They have been shut.” (1)

Al-Hasan said: “They have been bewitched.”

Qatadah said: “They have been seized.” (2)

Al-Kalbi said: “They have been blinded.” (3)

Ibn Kathir recited it as “sukirat,” without doubling the consonant, meaning: they were restrained and prevented from seeing, just as a river is dammed in order to hold back its water. “Rather, we are a people bewitched”: that is, magic has been worked upon us, so Muhammad ﷺ has bewitched us.

His saying, exalted is He: “And We have certainly placed constellations in the heaven”: the constellations are the great stars, derived from the sense of being manifest. One says, “A woman tabarrajat,” meaning, she appeared openly.

What is intended by them is the stations occupied by the sun, the moon, and the wandering planets. They are twelve constellations: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. (4)

Atiyyah said: They are palaces in heaven, upon which guards are stationed. (5)

(1) This is also the view of Mujahid and al-Dahhak. See: Tafsir al-Tabari, 14:12. (2) These two views are closely related. Al-Tabari also narrated both from Ibn Abbas and Qatadah. (3) Reported by al-Tabari, 14:13. Al-Tabari preferred the view that its meaning is: “Our sight has been taken away and bewitched, so that it does not perceive things as they truly are; its sharpness has gone and its light has been extinguished. This is like saying of something hot, when its intensity subsides and the sharpness of its heat is calmed: ‘It has sakara.’” (4) This is the view of Ibn Abbas, Abu Ubaydah, and others. See: Zad al-Masir, 4:387; al-Durr al-Manthur, 4:69. (5) The printed edition reads “Ibn Atiyyah,” as does al-Bahr al-Muhit. However, this statement is not from Ibn Atiyyah; rather, it is from Atiyyah, as stated in Zad al-Masir, and it is also narrated from Ibn Abbas. Ibn Qutaybah said: “It is said that they are twelve constellations. The original meaning of burj is a palace and beauty.” See: Zad al-Masir, 4:387; Mushkil al-Quran by Ibn Qutaybah, 1:238, cited from al-Qirtayn by Ibn Mutarrif; al-Durr al-Manthur, 4:69.
