Abd al-Wahid ibn Ahmad al-Mulayhi informed us; Ahmad ibn Abd Allah al-Nu'aymi informed us; Muhammad ibn Yusuf informed us; Muhammad ibn Isma'il narrated to us; Yahya ibn Bukayr narrated to us; al-Layth narrated to us from Khalid—namely, Ibn Yazid—from Sa'id ibn Abi Hilal, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from Ata ibn Yasar, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “On the Day of Resurrection, the earth will be a single loaf of bread, which the Almighty will turn over in His hand just as one of you turns over his loaf while travelling, as a provision of hospitality for the people of Paradise.” (1)
Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said regarding this verse: “The earth will be replaced with an earth like silver—white and pure—upon which no blood has been shed and no sin has been committed.” (2)
Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “The earth will be replaced with silver, and the heaven with gold.” (3)
Muhammad ibn Ka'b and Sa'id ibn Jubayr said: “The earth will be replaced with a white loaf of bread, from which the believer will eat beneath his feet.” (4)
It was also said that the meaning of this replacement is that the heavens will be made into gardens and the earth into fires.
It was also said that the replacement of the earth means changing it from one form to another: its mountains will be set in motion, its rivers filled in, its valleys levelled, its trees cut down, and it will be made into a level, barren plain. The replacement of the heavens means changing their condition: their sun will be wrapped up, their moon eclipsed, their stars scattered, and they will be, at one time, like molten oil and, at another, like molten metal.
Isma'il ibn Abd al-Qahir informed us; Abd al-Ghafir ibn Muhammad informed us; Muhammad ibn Isa al-Juludi informed us; Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Yusuf narrated to us; Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj narrated to us; Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us; Ali ibn Mushir narrated to us from Dawud—namely, Ibn Abi Hind—from al-Sha'bi, from Masruq, from Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, who said: I asked the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, about His saying: “On the Day when the earth will be changed into another earth, and the heavens as well.” I asked, “Where will the people be on that Day, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied: “Upon the Sirat.” (5)
