“Then is one who knows that what has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth like one who is blind? Only people of understanding take heed.” (19)
His saying, Most High: “For those who have responded to their Lord”: they answered their Lord and obeyed Him. “Is the best reward”: Paradise. “But those who did not respond to Him—if they had all that is in the earth, and the like of it with it, they would offer it as ransom”: that is, they would give all of it on the Day of Resurrection as a ransom from the Fire. “Those will have the worst reckoning.” Ibrahim al-Nakha'i said: “The worst reckoning is for a man to be held accountable for every one of his sins, with nothing forgiven him.” ⦗190/a⦘ “And their refuge” in the Hereafter “is Hell—an evil resting place”: the bed; that is, evil is what has been prepared for them.
His saying, Most High: “Then is one who knows that what has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth”—and thus believes in it and acts upon what it contains—“like one who is blind” to it, neither knowing it nor acting upon it? It was said that this was revealed concerning Hamzah and Abu Jahl. It was also said: concerning Ammar and Abu Jahl (1).
Thus, the first is Hamzah or Ammar, while the second is Abu Jahl, who is the blind one. That is, the one who sees the truth and follows it is not equal to one who neither sees it nor follows it.
“Only take heed”: that is, take admonition; “people of understanding”: those endowed with intellect.
