Al-Suddi said: The drinking cup was placed in his brother’s saddlebag, while his brother was unaware of it.

Ka‘b said: When Joseph told him, “I am indeed your brother,” Binyamin said, “I will not part from you.” Joseph replied, “You know how deeply my father grieves over me; if I detain you, his grief will only increase. Yet I cannot do this unless I implicate you in something grave and ascribe to you something blameworthy (1).”

He said, “I do not mind. Do whatever seems right to you, for I will not part from you.”

Joseph said, “Then I shall conceal my measuring cup in your saddlebag and accuse you all of theft, so that I may be able to bring you back after sending you away.”

He said, “Then do so.” This is the meaning of His saying, exalted is He:

قَالَ السُّدِّيُّ: جُعِلَتِ السِّقَايَةُ فِي رَحْلِ أَخِيهِ، وَالْأَخُ لَا يَشْعُرُ. وَقَالَ كَعْبٌ: لَمَّا قَالَ لَهُ يُوسُفُ إِنِّي أَنَا أَخُوكَ، قَالَ بِنْيَامِينُ: أَنَا لَا أُفَارِقُكَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ يُوسُفُ: قَدْ عَلِمْتُ اغْتِمَامَ وَالِدِي بِي وَإِذَا حَبَسْتُكَ ازْدَادَ غَمُّهُ وَلَا يُمْكِنُنِي هَذَا إِلَّا بَعْدَ أَنْ أُشْهِرَكَ بِأَمْرٍ فَظِيعٍ وَأَنْسِبَكَ إِلَى مَا لَا يُحْمَدُ (١) ، قَالَ: لَا أُبَالِي، فَافْعَلْ، مَا بَدَا لَكَ، فَإِنِّي لَا أُفَارِقُكَ، قَالَ: فَإِنِّي أَدُسُّ صَاعِي فِي رَحْلِكَ ثُمَّ أُنَادِي عَلَيْكُمْ بِالسَّرِقَةِ، لِيُهَيَّأَ لِي رَدُّكَ بَعْدَ تَسْرِيحِكَ. قَالَ: فَافْعَلْ فَذَلِكَ قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى:
