It is also said that none of the disbelievers escaped the Flood except ‘Uj ibn ‘Unuq. The water reached only to his waist. The reason for his survival was that Noah needed teak wood for the Ark but was unable to transport it, so ‘Uj carried it to him from al-Sham. Thus Allah Most High saved him from drowning on that account. (1)
“And Noah called out to his Lord, saying, ‘My Lord, indeed my son is of my family; and surely Your promise is true, and You are the Most Just of judges.’” (45)
(1) The eminent scholar Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, cited the hadith of Uj ibn Unuq as an example of a report whose falsity is established by sound evidence: “... What is not surprising is the audacity of such a liar against Allah; rather, what is astonishing is that someone includes this hadith in books of knowledge, such as works of Quranic exegesis and others, without clarifying its true nature. They claim that this Uj was among Noah’s descendants, whereas Allah Most High says, ‘And We made his descendants those who remained’ [al-Saffat 37:77], informing us that everyone who remained on the face of the earth was from Noah’s descendants. وَقِيلَ: مَا نَجَا مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ مِنَ الْغَرَقِ غَيْرَ عُوجِ بْنِ عُنُقٍ كَانَ الْمَاءُ إِلَى حُجْزَتِهُ، وَكَانَ سَبَبُ نَجَاتِهِ أَنَّ نُوحًا احْتَاجَ إِلَى خَشَبِ سَاجٍ لِلسَّفِينَةِ فَلَمْ يُمْكِنْهُ نَقْلُهُ فَحَمَلَهُ عُوجٌ إِلَيْهِ مِنَ الشَّامِ، فَنَجَّاهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى مِنَ الْغَرَقِ لِذَلِكَ (١) .
﴿وَنَادَى نُوحٌ رَبَّهُ فَقَالَ رَبِّ إِنَّ ابْنِي مِنْ أَهْلِي وَإِنَّ وَعْدَكَ الْحَقُّ وَأَنْتَ أَحْكَمُ الْحَاكِمِينَ (٤٥) ﴾ .
