“Indeed, the friends of Allah shall have no fear, nor shall they grieve: those who believe and are mindful of Allah.” (62–63)
“What, then, do those who fabricate lies against Allah expect on the Day of Resurrection?” Do they suppose that Allah will neither call them to account for it nor punish them for it? “Indeed, Allah is full of bounty toward mankind, but most of them are not grateful.”
Regarding His saying—exalted is He—“Whatever matter you may be engaged in,” O Muhammad: that is, any deed among deeds; its plural is shu'un (matters). “Whatever Quran you recite thereof”—that is, from Allah—“a revealed Quran.” It has also been said that “thereof” refers to the matter: that is, whatever Quran revealed concerning it you recite. He then addressed him and his community, saying: “Whatever deed you may do, We are witnesses over you as you proceed with it”; that is, as you enter into it and engage in it. The pronoun in “it” refers back to the deed, and ifadah means entering into an action. Ibn al-Anbari said: “You press on in it.” It was also said: “You do much of it.” Ifadah means impelling in great numbers.
“Nothing escapes your Lord’s knowledge”: that is, nothing is absent from your Lord. Al-Kisa'i recited it as ya'zibu, with a kasrah on the zay, while the others recited it with a dammah; both are dialectal forms. “Not even the weight of a dharrah”: that is, the weight of a dharrah; the particle min is supplementary. A dharrah is a tiny red ant. “On earth or in heaven, nor anything smaller than that”—that is, smaller than the dharrah—“nor greater.” Hamzah and Ya'qub recited both words with the final ra' in the nominative case, in coordination with the syntactic position of “weight” before the particle min. The others recited both in the genitive case, in coordination with dharrah. “Except that it is recorded in a clear Book”: this is the Preserved Tablet.
Regarding His saying—exalted is He—“Indeed, the friends of Allah shall have no fear, nor shall they grieve”: they differed concerning who deserves this designation. Some said: They are those whom Allah mentioned when He said: “Those who believe and are mindful of Allah.” Others said: They are those who love one another for the sake of Allah, exalted is He.
