upon you. Al-Qutaybi said: what has caused you hardship and harmed you. Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: what you have gone astray. Al-Dahhak and al-Kalbi said: what you have brought to completion.
“He is concerned for you,” that is, for your faith and rectitude. Qatadah said: “He is concerned for you,” meaning that Allah should guide those among you who have gone astray. “To the believers he is kind and merciful.” It was said: kind to those who obey and merciful to those who sin.
“But if they turn away”—if they turn away from faith and openly wage war against you—“then say: Allah is sufficient for me. There is no god but Him. Upon Him I have relied, and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne.”
It is narrated from Ubayy ibn Ka‘b that he said: “The last part of the Quran to be revealed was these two verses: ‘There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves’ to the end of the surah.” He said: “They were the verses most recently revealed by Allah.” (1)
