and Hilal ibn Umayyah and Murarah ibn al-Rabiʿ. They had not gone to the same lengths in repentance and apology as Abu Lubabah had done. So the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, shunned them for fifty nights and forbade the people to speak (1) to them or associate with them, until anxiety distressed them and the earth, vast as it was, became constricted for them. They were among the people of Badr, so some people began to say, “They are ruined,” while others said, “Perhaps Allah will forgive them.” Thus, they remained deferred pending Allah’s command, [not knowing] (2) whether He would punish them or have mercy on them, until their repentance was accepted after fifty nights (3).
