Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

that the Prophet’s cause would prevail. I said to him, “Your people have set a bounty equal to the blood-money for you. I told them what the people were planning against them and offered them provisions and supplies, but they neither took anything from me nor asked me for anything, except that they said, ‘Keep our whereabouts concealed.’”

I asked him to write me a guarantee of safety, so he instructed Amir ibn Fuhayrah, who wrote it on a piece of tanned hide. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, proceeded on his way.

Ibn Shihab said: Urwah ibn al-Zubayr informed me that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, met al-Zubayr among a group of Muslim traders returning from Syria. Al-Zubayr clothed the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and Abu Bakr in white garments.

The Muslims in Medina had heard that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had left Mecca, and every morning they would go out to al-Harrah and wait for him, until the heat of midday drove them back. One day, after waiting for a long time, they returned. Once they had gone back to their homes, a Jewish man climbed atop one of their fortresses to look at something, and he caught sight of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and his companions, clothed in white and shimmering through the mirage. The Jew could not contain himself and cried out at the top of his voice, “O Arabs! Here is your good fortune—the one you have been awaiting!”

The Muslims rushed to their weapons and met the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, at the rear of al-Harrah. He turned with them to the right and lodged among Banu Amr ibn Awf. This was on a Monday in the month of Rabi al-Awwal.

Abu Bakr stood among the people while the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sat silently. Those of the Ansar who came and had not seen the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, began greeting Abu Bakr, until the sun fell upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Then Abu Bakr came forward and shaded him with his cloak, and at that point the people recognized the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, remained among Banu Amr ibn Awf for a little over ten nights. He laid the foundations of the mosque founded upon piety and prayed in it. He then mounted his camel, while the people walked alongside him, until it knelt at the site of the Messenger’s Mosque in Medina. At that time, some Muslim men were praying there. It was a date-drying yard belonging to Suhayl and Sahl, two orphan boys under the care of Asad ibn Zurarah.

When his camel knelt there, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “This, Allah willing, is the place of lodging.” He then called the two boys and negotiated with them over the yard in order to make it into a mosque. They said, “Rather, we will give it to you as a gift, Messenger of Allah.” He then built it as a mosque.

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, began carrying the sun-dried bricks with them as they built it, saying as he carried the bricks:

“This labor is not like the labor at Khaybar;
it is more virtuous in the sight of our Lord and purer.”

And he would say:

“O Allah, the reward is the reward of the Hereafter,
so have mercy upon the Helpers and the Emigrants.”

Thus, he recited a verse by an unnamed Muslim man.
