Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

the last of them will be sent back over him, on a day whose measure is fifty thousand years, until Allah judges between His servants. He will then see his path, either to Paradise or to the Fire.

“And there is no owner of cattle or sheep who does not pay what is due on them but that, on the Day of Resurrection, he will be laid out for them upon a level plain, with none of them missing. There will be among them no animal with twisted horns, no hornless one, and no one with a broken horn. They will gore him with their horns and trample him with their hooves. Whenever the first of them passes over him, the last of them will be sent back over him, on a day whose measure is fifty thousand years, until Allah judges between His servants. He will then see his path, either to Paradise or to the Fire.” (1)

We have related from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Whoever is given wealth by Allah and does not pay its zakat, his wealth will be made to appear to him on the Day of Resurrection as a bald-headed serpent with two black marks above its eyes. It will coil around his neck on the Day of Resurrection, seize the corners of his mouth—that is, his jaws—and say: ‘I am your wealth; I am your hoarded treasure.’” He then recited: “And let not those who are miserly with what Allah has given them...” — the verse. (2)

It is narrated from Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said: “Any wealth exceeding four thousand dirhams is hoarded treasure, whether you have paid zakat on it or not; whatever is less than that is provision.” (3)

It was also said: Whatever exceeds one’s needs is hoarded treasure.

Isma'il ibn Abd al-Qahir informed us; Abd al-Ghafir ibn Muhammad informed us; Muhammad ibn Isa al-Juludi informed us; Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Sufyan related to us; Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj related to us; Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah related to us; Waki' related to us; al-A'mash related to us from al-Ma'rur ibn Suwayd, from Abu Dharr, who said: “I came upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while he was sitting in the shade of the Ka'bah. When he saw me, he said: ‘By the Lord of the Ka'bah, they are the greatest losers!’

“I was startled and sat down, but I could not remain still before rising and saying: ‘O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, who are they?’ He said: ‘They are those with the greatest wealth, except those who give like this, and this, and this—from in front of them, behind them, to their right, and to their left. But how few they are!’” (4)

It is narrated from Abu Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him, that he used to say: “Whoever leaves behind silver or gold will be branded with it on the Day of Resurrection.” (5)
