of the Ansar and their mountain pass. The Ansar are the inner garment, and all other people are the outer garment. After me, you will indeed encounter favoritism, so be patient until you meet me at the Pond.” (1)
Ismail ibn Abd al-Qahir informed us; Abd al-Ghafir ibn Muhammad informed us; Muhammad ibn Isa al-Juludi informed us; Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Sufyan related to us; Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj related to us; Muhammad ibn ⦗155/A⦘ Abi Umar al-Makki related to us; Sufyan related from Umar ibn Said ibn Masruq, from his father, from Abayah ibn Rifaah, from Rafi ibn Khadij, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gave Abu Sufyan ibn Harb, Safwan ibn Umayyah, Uyaynah ibn Hisn, and al-Aqra ibn Habis one hundred camels each, while he gave Abbas ibn Mirdas less than that. Abbas ibn Mirdas said:
“Neither Hisn nor Habis
Outstrips Mirdas in the assembly.
Do you place my plunder and al-Ubayd’s plunder
Between Uyaynah and al-Aqra?
I was not inferior to either of them;
And whom you abase today shall not be raised.”
He said: So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, completed his share to one hundred. (2)
The hadith states that, afterward, some people from Hawazin came as Muslims and said, “O Messenger of Allah, you are the best and most dutiful of people. Our children, our women, and our property have been taken.” (3)
Abd al-Wahid ibn Ahmad al-Mulayhi informed us; Ahmad ibn Abd Allah al-Numaymi informed us; Muhammad ibn Yusuf informed us; Muhammad ibn Ismail related to us; Said ibn Ufair related to us; al-Layth related to me; Uqayl related to me from Ibn Shihab, from Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, that Marwan and al-Miswar ibn Makhramah informed him that, when the delegation of Hawazin came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, as Muslims, they asked him to return their property and captives to them. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to them: “I have with me those whom you see, and the speech most beloved to me is that which is truest. So choose one of the two: either the captives or the property.” They said, “We choose our captives.”
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then stood, praised Allah, Most High, as He deserves to be praised, and said: “To proceed: these brothers of yours have come having repented, and I consider it right to return their captives to them. Whoever among you wishes to willingly relinquish his share for them may do so; and whoever wishes to retain his entitlement until we compensate him from the first spoils Allah grants us may do so.” The people said, “We have willingly relinquished that.”
