Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

Abd al-Wahid ibn Ahmad al-Mulayhi informed us; Ahmad ibn Abd Allah al-Numaymi informed us; Muhammad ibn Yusuf informed us; Muhammad ibn Ismail related to us; Abu al-Yaman related to us; Shuayb related to us; al-Zuhri related to us; Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, informed me that some men of the Ansar said to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when Allah had bestowed upon His Messenger the spoils of Hawazin, and he began giving men of Quraysh one hundred camels each: “May Allah forgive the Messenger of Allah! He gives to Quraysh and leaves us, while our swords are still dripping with their blood!”

Anas said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was informed of what they had said, so he sent for the Ansar and gathered them in a tent of tanned hide, inviting no one else with them. When they had assembled, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came to them and said, “What is this report that has reached me concerning you?” Their men of understanding replied, “As for our men of sound judgment, O Messenger of Allah, they said nothing. But some of our younger men said, ‘May Allah forgive the Messenger of Allah! He gives to Quraysh and leaves the Ansar, while our swords are still dripping with their blood.’”

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “I give to men who have only recently left disbelief. Are you not content that people should depart with wealth, while you return to your dwellings with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him? By Allah, what you return with is better than what they return with.” They said, “Indeed, O Messenger of Allah, we are content.” He then said to them, “After me, you will see severe favoritism; so be patient until you meet Allah and His Messenger at the Pond.” (1)

Yunus reported from Ibn Shihab: “I give to men who have only recently left disbelief in order to win over their hearts.” He also said: “Be patient until you meet Allah and His Messenger, for I shall be at the Pond.” They replied, “We will be patient.” (2)

Abd al-Wahid ibn Ahmad al-Mulayhi informed us; Ahmad ibn Abd Allah al-Numaymi informed us; Muhammad ibn Yusuf informed us; Muhammad ibn Ismail related to us; Wuhayb related to us; Amr ibn Yahya related from Abbad ibn Tamim, from Abd Allah ibn Zayd ibn Asim, who said: When Allah bestowed victory upon His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, on the day of Hunayn, he distributed among the people, giving to those whose hearts were to be reconciled, but he gave nothing to the Ansar. They felt hurt because they had not received what the others had received. So he addressed them, saying:

“O company of the Ansar, did I not find you astray, and Allah guided you through me? Were you not divided, and Allah united you through me? Were you not poor, and Allah enriched you through me?” Each time he said something, they replied, “Allah and His Messenger have bestowed the greater favor.” He said, “What prevents you from answering the Messenger of Allah?” Each time he said something, they replied, “Allah and His Messenger have bestowed the greater favor.” He said, “Had you wished, you could have said such-and-such. Are you not content that people should depart with sheep and camels, while you take the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, to your dwellings? Were it not for the Hijrah, I would have been one of the Ansar. If the people were to take one valley or mountain pass, I would follow the valley
