“The only response of his people was to say, ‘Drive them out of your town! They are people who keep themselves pure.’ So We saved him and his family, except for his wife: she was among those who remained behind. And We rained upon them a rain. So observe how the end of the criminals was. And to Midian We sent their brother Shuʿayb. He said, ‘My people, worship Allah; you have no god other than Him. Clear evidence has come to you from your Lord. Give full measure and weight, do not deprive people of what is rightfully theirs, and do not spread corruption in the land after it has been set aright. That is better for you, if you are believers.’” (82–85)

His saying, exalted is He: “The only response of his people was to say”—that is, they said to one another—“Drive them out,” meaning Lot and those who followed his religion, “from your town! They are people who keep themselves pure,” keeping themselves aloof from men’s anuses.
