Allah, Most High, said: “And We shall remove whatever resentment is in their hearts.”
Abd al-Wahid al-Mulayhi informed us; Ahmad ibn Abdullah al-Nu'aymi informed us; Muhammad ibn Yusuf informed us; Muhammad ibn Isma'il related to us; al-Salt ibn Muhammad related to us; Yazid ibn Zuray' related to us; Sa'id related from Qatadah, from Abu al-Mutawakkil al-Naji, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “The believers will be delivered from the Fire and detained upon a bridge between Paradise and the Fire. The wrongs that existed between them in this world will be requited among them, until, once they have been refined and purified, they are granted permission to enter Paradise. By Him in whose hand is Muhammad’s soul, each one of them will know his dwelling in Paradise better than he knew his dwelling in this world.” (1)
Al-Suddi said concerning this verse: When the people of Paradise are led to Paradise, they will find a tree at its gate, with two springs at the base of its trunk. They will drink from one of them, and whatever resentment is in their hearts will be removed; this is the purifying drink. Then they will wash themselves from the other, and the radiance of bliss will flow over them. Thereafter, they will never become disheveled or sallow-faced. This is what is meant by “to this”: namely, the path to Paradise.
Sufyan al-Thawri said: Its meaning is: He guided us to a deed whose reward is this. Regarding the words, “And we would never,” Ibn Amir recited, “We would never,” without the conjunction “and”: “We would never have found guidance had Allah not guided us. The messengers of our Lord certainly came with the truth.” This is the statement of the people of Paradise when they behold before their very eyes what the messengers had promised them. “And they will be called, ‘This is Paradise, which you have been made to inherit for what you used to do.’” It was said that this call will be made when they see Paradise from afar and are called: “This is Paradise.”
It was also said that this call will take place within Paradise.
Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Tawbah al-Khatib informed us; Abu Tahir Muhammad ibn al-Harith informed us; Muhammad ibn Ya'qub al-Kisa'i informed us; Abdullah ibn Muhammad informed us; Ibrahim ibn Abdullah al-Khallal related to us; Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak related from Sufyan, from Abu Ishaq, from al-Agharr, from Abu Sa'id and Abu Hurayrah, who said: A caller will call: “You shall remain healthy and never fall ill; you shall live and never die; you shall remain youthful and never grow decrepit; and you shall live in bliss and never suffer misery.” This is His saying: “And they will be called, ‘This is Paradise, which you have been made to inherit for what you used to do.’” This is a sound hadith, recorded by Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj from Ishaq ibn Ibrahim and Abd al-Rahman ibn Humayd, from Abd al-Razzaq, from Sufyan al-Thawri, through this chain as a report traced back to the Prophet.
