And they differed over how the weighing will take place. Some said: The records of deeds will be weighed. It has been narrated to us that “a man will have ninety-nine scrolls spread out before him, each scroll extending as far as the eye can see. Then a card will be brought forth for him containing the testimony: There is no god worthy of worship but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. The scrolls will be placed in one pan of the Balance and the card in the other; the scrolls will fly up, while the card will weigh heavily.” (1)
It was also said: People themselves will be weighed. It has been narrated to us from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said: “On the Day of Resurrection, a huge, fat man will come, yet in the sight of Allah he will not weigh as much as the wing of a mosquito.” (2)
It was also said: Deeds will be weighed. This was narrated from Ibn Abbas: good deeds will be brought in a beautiful form, and evil deeds in an ugly form, and they will be placed on the Balance. The wisdom behind weighing deeds is that Allah tests His servants with faith in this world and establishes the proof against them in the Hereafter.
“Then whoever’s scales are heavy”—Mujahid said: with his good deeds—“it is they who will be successful.”
“And whoever’s scales are light—it is they who have lost themselves because they used to wrongfully reject Our signs. (9) And We have certainly established you upon the earth and made for you therein means of livelihood. Little are you grateful. (10) And We certainly created you, then fashioned you, then said to the angels, ‘Prostrate to Adam’; so they prostrated, except Iblis—he was not among those who prostrated. (11)”
