55 — ʿAbd Allah narrated to us: Abu Bakr ibn Hashim ibn al-Qasim narrated to us; Saʿid ibn ʿAmir narrated to us; Humayd ibn al-Aswad, from ʿIsa ibn Abi ʿIsa al-Hannat, from al-Shaʿbi, said: “This knowledge used to be sought only from those who combined two qualities: intellect and devout worship. If a man is devout but not intelligent, or intelligent yet not devout, then do not take it from him, for this matter is attained only by those who are both devout and intelligent.” Al-Shaʿbi continued, “I now fear that today it is being sought from people who possess neither of the two—no intellect and no devotion.”
