Al-'Aql wa-FadluhIbn Abi al-Dunya

30 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us. He said: al-Harith ibn Muhammad al-Tamimi related to us, from a Qurayshi elder, who said: Ayub al-Qaryah said:

“Men are three kinds: an intelligent man, a fool, and a wicked man.

The intelligent man—if addressed, he replies; if he speaks, he speaks accurately; and when he listens, he absorbs the meaning.

The fool—if he talks, he is rash; if he recounts something, he blunders; and if he is urged to do something disgraceful, he does it.

The wicked man—if you entrust him, he betrays you; if you converse with him, he disgraces you.”

Another transmitter added: “And if you confide a secret to him, he will not keep it for you.”
