5 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Khalid ibn Khidash narrated to us; Hammad ibn Zayd, on the authority of Mujalid, from al-Shaʿbi, from Masruq, reported: “We were in the company of ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) when lineage was mentioned, and he said: ‘A person’s lineage is his religion, his root is his intellect, and his dignity is his character.’”
