Al-'Aql wa-FadluhIbn Abi al-Dunya

77 – Abu Bakr narrated to us; Abu Nasr al-Tammār transmitted it. He said: ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar related, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmar, from Zayd, from ʿUqbah, who said: ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“Men are three kinds. First, the intelligent man: when affairs present themselves and become confusing, he directs them by his own judgment and stands by his opinion. Second, a man to whom an issue arises but he does not grasp it; he seeks out people of sound judgment and follows their view. Third, the bewildered man: he neither consults sensibly nor obeys one who would guide him.”
