58 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān told me, saying: A man from Quraysh related:
“We were in the presence of Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Malik when a man spoke with remarkable eloquence. Sulaymān wanted to gauge his intelligence but discovered that he was rather dull-witted. Sulaymān then said,
‘An excess of speech over intellect is deception, and an excess of intellect over speech is an eyesore. The finest condition is that each should beautify the other.’”
