—is utterly reprehensible. How could we even imagine that this sound ḥadīth never reached his ears? And what ḥadīth is it?

Now, I ask you to pay close attention. The report is lengthy, but I shall relate only the part that concerns us at the moment. A Companion of the Messenger ﷺ named Muʿāwiyah ibn al-Ḥakam al-Sulamī came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah! I have a slave-girl who grazes my sheep on Mount Uḥud here in Madinah. One day a wolf attacked my flock, and I—being a man who becomes angry as men do—struck her with a slap on the cheek. O Messenger of Allah, I am therefore obliged to free a slave.” He was seeking clarification from the Prophet as to whether manumitting this very slave-girl would expiate the injustice of that blow; after all, a wolf had attacked, so what could the man have done about the wolf—let alone the girl? Regretful over that slap—or “that blow,” as he put it—he awaited the Prophet’s ruling. The Prophet ﷺ said to him, “Bring her here.”

When she arrived, he asked her, “Where is Allah?”—and this is the crucial point. The Messenger of Allah said, “Where is Allah?” She replied, “In the heaven (above all).” He then asked, “And who am I?” She answered, “You are the Messenger of Allah.” He turned to her master and said, “Set her free, for she is a believer.”

Who was it, then, who asked, “Where is Allah?” It was the Messenger of Allah himself, and the slave-girl answered that Allah is above the heaven.

Al-Shaʿrāwī and many like him among the scholars of al-Azhar do not affirm that Allah is above the heaven, even though every Muslim recites His words in the blessed sūrah al-Mulk: “Do you feel secure that He who is above the heaven will not cause the earth to swallow you, whereupon it would quake? Or do you feel secure that He who is above the heaven will not send against you a storm of stones? Then you will know how severe was My warning.” (al-Mulk 67:16-17)

In this respect the slave-girl knew more than al-Shaʿrāwī and his ilk, for she supplied the answer that earned the Prophet’s testimony to her faith; on that basis he said to her master, “Set her free, for she is a believer.” She bore witness that Allah—
