Shaykh: When he came to Jordan they were taken with him and began to follow him wherever he went… One of our brothers—al-Nabulsi, who is still alive—told me almost exactly what you have just said: he was captivated by Shaykh al-Sha‘rāwī’s words, his eloquence, his clarity, the illustrative examples he gives, and so on. I asked him, “Did you ever test him in matters of creed?” He said, “No.” Later this same brother told me, “I was in a friend’s car when we went to visit Shaykh al-Sha‘rāwī, attended his session, and then offered him a lift. I seized the chance, got in with my friend, and held the following conversation with al-Sha‘rāwī to examine his beliefs. I said, ‘Sir, I would like to ask you about Allah’s statement, repeated in more than one place in the Quran: ar-Raḥmān ‘alā al-‘Arsh istawā—‘The Most Merciful rose above the Throne’ (Taha 20:5). What does it mean?’ He replied, ‘istawā means istawlà—He took control.’ I possessed some sound understanding of doctrine, so I began to debate him, that is, to discuss the matter with the shaykh. People are generally not brought up to see a mere youngster argue with a prominent shaykh; they regard that as something very serious indeed, for the common saying goes:
If Hadhām has spoken, then believe her; the very word is what Hadhām says.
How, then, could one disbelieve Hadhām and start bandying words with her? That weighed heavily on the shaykh, but our brother bore it and put to him a question that is highly sensitive among us Salafis. After he had interpreted the verse with that meaning—an interpretation that is invalid, as I shall explain shortly, Allah willing—he asked him, ‘Very well, Sir. If someone were to say to you, “Where is Allah?” what would you answer?’ He replied, ‘I seek refuge in Allah! A person must not ask, “Where is Allah?” Allah is everywhere.’ My friend said, ‘On that day I realized that his creed departs from the Book and the Sunnah, so I no longer regarded him as I once did.’ That is what happened.
What concerns us now is that the verse, ‘The Most Merciful rose above the Throne’ (Taha 20:5), has—for the scholars of the Muslims
