50 – (ṣaḥīḥ)
Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said, “I heard Abū Qatādah ibn Ribʿī say, ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
‘Al-ruʾyā (a good vision) is from Allah, whereas the ḥulm (a distressing dream) is from Satan. So if any one of you sees something he dislikes, let him blow lightly to his left three times upon waking and seek refuge in Allah from its evil; then, by Allah’s permission, it will not harm him.’
Abū Salamah added, ‘I used to have visions that weighed on me more heavily than a mountain, but after I heard this ḥadīth, I stopped worrying about them.’
In another narration he said, ‘I used to see dreams that troubled me—indeed, I would fall ill because of them—until I heard Abū Qatādah say that he too used to suffer from such dreams, until he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
‘The righteous ruʾyā is from Allah. When any one of you sees something he likes, let him relate it only to those he loves; but if he sees something he dislikes, let him not mention it to anyone, let him spit lightly to his left three times, and seek refuge in Allah from Satan the accursed and from the evil of what he saw, and it will not harm him.’” ⦗85⦘
