35 – (sound) On the authority of ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him):
Fāṭimah (may Allah be pleased with her) once came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to ask him for a servant. Not finding him, she met ʿĀʾishah and told her of her request. ʿAlī said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then arrived while we had already settled into our beds and said, “Shall I not direct the two of you to something better for you than a servant? When you retire to your bed, say subḥān Allāh (Glory be to Allah) thirty-three times, al-ḥamdu lillāh (Praise be to Allah) thirty-three times, and Allāhu akbar (Allah is the Greatest) thirty-four times. That is better for you than a servant.”
ʿAlī added, “I have never abandoned them since I heard them from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).” He was asked, “Not even on the night of Ṣiffīn?” He replied, “Not even on the night of Ṣiffīn.”
