174 – (ṣaḥīḥ)
ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr — may Allah be pleased with them both — reported that whenever the Prophet ﷺ had settled himself upon his camel to set out on a journey, he would declare “Allāhu akbar” (Allah is greatest) three times and then recite:
“Subḥāna-lladhī sakhkhara lanā hādhā wa mā kunnā lahu muqrinīn * wa innā ilā Rabbinā lamunqalibūn”
“Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us; we could never have mastered it, and surely to our Lord we shall return.” (Qur’an 43:13-14)
After that he would supplicate:
“Allāhumma innā nasʾaluka fī safarinā hādhā al-birra wa-t-taqwā wa mina-l-ʿamali mā tarḍā. Allāhumma hawwin ʿalaynā safaranā hādhā wa-ṭwi ʿannā buʿdahu. Anta-ṣ-ṣāḥibu fī-s-safar wa-l-khalīfatu fī-l-ahl. Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min waʿthāʾi-s-safar wa-kāʾābati-l-manẓar wa sūʾi-l-munqalabi fī-l-māli wa-l-ahl,”
(O Allah, we ask You during this journey of ours for righteousness and piety and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and fold up its distance. You are the Companion on the journey and the Guardian over the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, from gloomy sights, and from an ill return concerning wealth and family.)
When he returned he would repeat these words, adding: “Āyibūn tāʾibūn ʿābidūn li-Rabbinā ḥāmidūn” (We are returning, repentant, worshipping, praising our Lord).
