173 – (hasan ṣaḥīḥ)
ʿAlī ibn Rabīʿah said:
I was present when ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib — may Allah be pleased with him — was brought a riding animal. As he placed his foot in the stirrup he said, “In the name of Allah.” When he sat firmly upon its back he said, “All praise is for Allah,” and then recited:
“Subḥāna-lladhī sakhkhara lanā hādhā wa mā kunnā lahu muqrinīn * wa innā ilā Rabbinā lamunqalibūn”
“Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us; we could never have mastered it, and surely to our Lord we shall return.” (Qur’an 43:13-14)
He then said, “All praise is for Allah” three times, followed by “Allah is greatest” three times, after which he supplicated:
“Subḥānaka Allāhumma, I have indeed wronged myself, so forgive me, for no one forgives sins but You.”
He then laughed. Someone asked, “Commander of the Believers, what made you laugh?” He replied, “I saw the Prophet ﷺ do exactly what I have just done, and then he laughed. I asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, what made you laugh?’ He said:
‘Your Lord — Exalted is He — is amazed at His servant when he says, “My Lord, forgive me my sins,” knowing that no one forgives sins except Me.’” ⦗144⦘
