152 – (hasan)
ʿĀʾishah — may Allah be pleased with her — narrated:
The people complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the drought and the lack of rain. He therefore ordered that a pulpit be set up for him in the musallā (the open-air prayer ground) and appointed a day on which the people should come out. On that day, when only the rim of the sun had appeared, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out, sat on the pulpit, pronounced takbīr, and praised Allah, then said:
“You have complained about the barrenness of your lands and the delay of rain beyond its proper season. Allah, exalted is He, has commanded you to call upon Him and has promised to answer you.
(All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful, Master of the Day of Judgment.) There is no god but Allah; He does whatever He wills. O Allah, You are Allah—there is no deity but You. You are the Self-Sufficient and we are the needy. Send down rain upon us, and make what You send a source of strength and sustenance for us for a while.”
Then he raised his hands, and he kept them raised until the whiteness of his armpits was visible. Next, he turned his back to the people and inverted his cloak while his hands were still raised. After that he faced the people again, came down from the pulpit, and prayed two rakʿahs.
Allah then formed a cloud; it thundered and flashed lightning, and, by Allah’s permission, began to pour rain. He had not yet reached his mosque before the flood-water was running in the channels. When he saw the people rushing for shelter he ﷺ laughed until his molars could be seen and said:
“I bear witness that Allah is capable of all things, and that I am Allah’s servant and His Messenger.”
