106 – (Sound chain of transmission) ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib narrated from his father, who said: ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir—may Allah be pleased with him—led us in prayer and kept it brief. Some of the people remarked, “You have lightened—or rather shortened—the prayer.” He replied, “Even so, within it I recited supplications that I heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.”
When he rose to leave, one of the congregation followed him and asked about that supplication. He said:
“O Allah, by Your knowledge of the unseen and Your power over all creation, let me live as long as You know that life is better for me, and cause me to die when You know that death is better for me.
O Allah, I ask You for fear of You in private and in public; I ask You for a word of truth whether I am pleased or angry; I ask You for moderation in poverty and in wealth; I ask You for bliss that never ends; I ask You for an everlasting delight of the eye; I ask You for contentment after the decree; I ask You for a cool, pleasant life after death; I ask You for the pleasure of gazing upon Your Face and the longing to meet You, without any harmful hardship or misguiding trial.
O Allah, adorn us with the beauty of faith and make us guides who are rightly guided.” ⦗109⦘
