runs contrary to what we have concluded.
-
He said, “And where is the proof for that?”
-
I replied, “Allah—exalted is He—states: ‘And remember what is recited in your homes of Allah’s verses and wisdom. Surely Allah is Ever-Gentle, All-Aware’ (33:34). He thus informs them that two things are recited in their houses.”
-
He said, “The Qur’an is recited—how, then, is wisdom recited?”
-
I said, “Recitation here simply means that both Qur’an and sunnah are to be pronounced exactly as they were conveyed.”
-
He said, “This verse is therefore clearer than the first in showing that wisdom is distinct from the Qur’an.”
-
I added, “Moreover, Allah has made it obligatory for us to follow His Prophet ﷺ.”
-
He asked, “Where is that stated?”
-
I answered, “Allah—exalted is He—says: ‘But no—by your Lord! They will never truly believe until they make you judge in all their disputes, then find no discomfort in themselves regarding what you have decided and submit in full submission’ (4:65).
-
And He—exalted is He—says: ‘Whoever obeys the Messenger has indeed obeyed Allah’ (4:80).
-
And He says: ‘So let those who oppose his command beware, lest a trial befall them or a painful punishment overtake them’ (24:63).”
-
He said, “Nothing is more fitting for us to say about ‘wisdom’ than that it is the sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Had some of our companions been right in claiming that Allah’s command to submit to the judgment and wisdom of the Messenger ﷺ referred only to what was revealed directly in the Qur’an, then one who refused to submit to him could still be counted among those who submit to the judgment of the Messenger—an obvious contradiction.”
-
I said, “Indeed, Allah—exalted is He—has made obeying him mandatory, for He says: ‘Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it’ (59:7).”
