[Categories of Rejected Reports and the Grounds for Rejection]
Next, the reports that are judged rejected: the basis for rejection is either an omission in the isnad, or a critique ⦗1⦘ leveled against a transmitter—of whatever kind—broader ⦗2⦘ than merely questioning the narrator’s religious integrity or his accuracy.
[The Muʿallaq]
As for the omission, it may occur at the beginning of the isnad through the compiler’s editorial intervention, or at its end—that is, within the isnad after the Successor ⦗3⦘—or elsewhere ⦗4⦘. The first case is termed a muʿallaq, whether the number of omitted transmitters is one ⦗5⦘ or more ⦗6⦘.
[Relationship between the Muʿallaq and the Muʿḍal]
Between the muʿallaq and the type known as muʿḍal, to be mentioned shortly, there is both overlap and distinction. Insofar as a muʿḍal is defined ⦗7⦘ as a report from whose isnad two or more consecutive transmitters have been omitted ⦗8⦘, it coincides with certain instances of the muʿallaq. Yet insofar as the muʿallaq is restricted to omissions at the beginning of the isnad that arise from the compiler’s own intervention, it diverges from the muʿḍal ⦗9⦘, for the muʿallaq in that respect is the broader category ⦗10⦘.
