through Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, with the wording (1): “faqdurū (2) thalāthīn” — “then reckon it as thirty” (3).
And in this mutābaʿa — whether it be complete (4) or (5) partial — corroboration is not restricted to identical wording; agreement in meaning alone is sufficient, provided that the report is still transmitted from that very Companion.
[Shawāhid]
If a text is found that is transmitted through another Companion and resembles it in both wording and meaning, or in meaning alone, then it is called a shāhid.
Its example (6) with regard to the ḥadith we mentioned earlier (7) is what al-Nasaʾi (8) recorded: from Muḥammad ibn Ḥunayn, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from the Prophet ﷺ, in which he cited wording identical to that of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār from Ibn ʿUmar. This, then, is a corroboration by wording.
As for a corroboration by meaning, it is what al-Bukhārī (9) narrated through Muḥammad ibn Ziyād, from Abū Hurayrah, in the wording: “fa-in ghumma (10) ʿalaykum fa-akmilū ʿiddata Shaʿbān thalāthīn” — “If the sky is overcast for you, then complete the count of Shaʿbān as thirty.”
