ʿAbbās—may Allah be pleased with him—who said: “A man died during the time of the Messenger of Allah (1), leaving no heir except a freedman whom he had emancipated…” (2) — the remainder of the report. (3)
Ibn Jurayj (4) and others (5) followed Ibn ʿUyaynah in relating it with a continuous chain.
Hammād ibn Zayd, however, differed: he transmitted it (6) from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, from ʿAwsajah, without mentioning Ibn ʿAbbās. (7)
Abū Ḥātim said, “The preserved version is the ḥadith of Ibn ʿUyaynah.” (8) End quote.
Now, Hammād ibn Zayd was a narrator of probity and precision, yet Abū Ḥātim still preferred the report of those who were (9) greater in number than he. (10)
(1) MS W reads “al-nabi” (the Prophet).
(2) Reported by al-Tirmidhi in the Jamiʿ (no. 2106), al-Nasaʾi in al-Sunan al-Kubra (no. 6376), and Ibn Majah (no. 2741).
(3) MS H vocalizes the word “al-hadith” both as nominative and accusative; the adopted reading follows J, D, and K. Al-Qari, in Sharh Sharh al-Nukhba (p. 332), says that all three grammatical cases are permissible. Al-Laqani, Qadaʾ al-Watar (p. 834), takes it as the object of an omitted verb—“Recite the hadith,” meaning “complete the report,” and the like—while some allow it to be read as nominative, making it the subject whose predicate is omitted.
(4) The same wording is found in al-Nasaʾi, al-Sunan al-Kubra (no. 6377) and al-Tahawi, Sharh Mushkil al-Athar (no. 3880).
(5) Among its transmitters are: Hammad b. Salama, as in Abu Dawud (no. 2905); Hammad b. Zayd and Wahib b. Khalid, as in Sharh Mushkil al-Athar (no. 3881); and Muhammad b. Muslim al-Taʾifi, as in the same work (no. 3883).
(6) MS D reads “fa-rawa” (“then he related”).
(7) I.e., according to the sounder chain from him, as in al-Bayhaqi, al-Sunan al-Kubra (no. 12396).
(8) ʿIlal (4/564). Al-Bukhari judged the hadith weak because of ʿAwsaja; see his al-Tarikh al-Kabir (7/76).
(9) MSS A and K read “huwa” (he). Al-Qari, Sharh Sharh al-Nukhba (p. 333), explains that the singular “huwa” corresponds to the wording of man (“who”), while another copy has “man hum” to reflect its plural sense.
(10) MS A reads “minhu ʿadadan” (“from him a number”), with the order of the words reversed.
