they had done so, the testimony of reality would have refuted their claim(1); for the qualities on which authenticity(3) hinges(2) in al-Bukhārī’s collection are more complete and more rigorous(4) than those in Muslim’s, and his criteria with respect to them are stronger and more exacting(5).
[Aspects in Which Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī Outweighs Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim]
- Superiority in terms of continuity: al-Bukhārī stipulates that the transmitter must be proven(6) to have met the person from whom he narrates—even once—whereas Muslim is satisfied with mere contemporaneity(7). On that basis Muslim charged al-Bukhārī with the supposed necessity(8) of rejecting(9) every isnād that contains ʿanʿana altogether(10)!
Yet this charge is unfounded, for once it has been established that a narrator met his source even once, there is no room in his narrations(11) for the possibility(12) that he did not actually hear the report from him; admitting such a possibility would imply that the narrator is a mudallis, whereas the discussion concerns one who is not engaged in tadlīs.
(1) MS B reads “raddahu,” while MS T has “li-radd.”
(2) MS M reads “yadur.”
(3) MS W has “li-sihha.”
(4) MSS A and K read “wa-asadd,” whereas MS T shows “wa-asnad.”
(5) MSS A, H, T, K, and M read “wa-ashadd.” Al-Qari states in his Sharh Sharh al-Nukhba (p. 273) that asadd—with an open sin and a doubled dal—means “more precise and manifestly correct.” A marginal note in MS J, in the author’s own hand, adds: “then he attained this through reading and research.”
(6) The word “lahu” is absent from MS H.
(7) A marginal note to MS K reads “bi-mujarrad.”
(8) MSS J and M insert “ila”; MS H reads “yuhtaju” (with an initial damma); the adopted text follows MSS B and K.
(9) In MS A the word appears both as “taqbal” and “yuqbal.”
(10) See Sahih Muslim, 1:28.
(11) MSS A and T read “riwayatahu,” while MS H repeats the term in both forms.
(12) From the phrase “ma yaqtaḍi taqdimaha ʿala al-thalitha” up to this point, the text in MS H is supplied in a different hand, amounting to roughly one folio.
