we reject that contention (7), and the ground for our rejection is that the scholars unanimously hold that one must act upon every report that is sound, even if the Two Shaykhs did not include it. Were consensus limited merely to practical implementation, the two Ṣaḥīḥs would enjoy no particular privilege; yet there is unanimous agreement that the pair possesses a special distinction with respect to authenticity itself.
Among those who have expressly maintained that what the Two Shaykhs recorded (1) yields inferential knowledge are the Professor (2) Abū Isḥāq al-Isfarāyinī (3), and—among the leading ḥadīth masters—Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Humaydī (4), Abū al-Faḍl Ibn Ṭāhir (5), and others.
(1) MSS D, H, Y, and K read “akhrajahu.” Al-Qari, in Sharh Sharh al-Nukhba, p. 226, explains: “ma kharrajahu (with a doubled r) means akhrajahu wa dhakarahu, i.e., he cited it and recorded it.”
(2) The word “al-ustadh” is absent from MS D.
(3) MS T reads “al-Isfarayini,” whereas MS M has “al-Isfaraʾini.” The correct form is al-Isfarayni (with a single ya), a nisba to the small town Isfarayin near Nishapur. This vocalization is given by al-Samʿani (al-Ansab 1:223), Ibn Khallikan (Wafayat al-Aʿyan 1:28), Ibn al-Athir (al-Lubab 1:55), al-Suyuti (Lub al-Lubab, p. 152), al-Zabidi (Taj al-ʿArus 35:191), and al-Asnawi (Tabaqat al-Shafiʿiyya 1:40); only Yaqut al-Hamawi (Muʿjam al-Buldan 1:177) adds an extra silent ya, writing “Isfarayiyin.”
“Abu Ishaq al-Isfarayni” is Abu Ishaq Ibrahim b. Muhammad b. Ibrahim, the Shafiʿi scholar of usul (d. 418 AH); see Siyar Aʿlam al-Nubalaʾ 17:353. The author cites his statement in al-Nukat 1:377: “Practitioners unanimously agree that the reports found in the two Sahihs are certainly from the Lawgiver; any dispute about some of them concerns their chains and transmitters.”
(4) The person meant is the hadith master Abu ʿAbd Allah Muhammad b. Abi Nasr Futuh b. ʿAbd Allah b. Futuh al-Humaydi al-Andalusi (d. 488 AH); see Siyar Aʿlam al-Nubalaʾ 19:120. His remark occurs in al-Jamʿ bayn al-Sahihayn 1:73.
(5) The reference is to the hadith master Abu l-Fadl Muhammad b. Tahir b. ʿAli al-Qaysarani al-Maqdisi (d. 507 AH); see Siyar Aʿlam al-Nubalaʾ 19:361. His statement is found in Safwat al-Tasawwuf, p. 322.
