And al-Ḥākim (1) Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Naysābūrī likewise wrote on the subject, yet he neither refined it nor arranged it systematically (2). He was succeeded by Abū Nuʿaym al-Aṣbahānī (3), who produced, on the basis of his book, a mustakhraj (4)—an independent compilation that reproduces the same reports through different chains—though he still left points open to critique. After them came al-Khaṭīb Abū Bakr (5) al-Baghdādī (6), who authored, on the governing principles of transmission, a volume entitled al-Kifāyah (7), and, on its etiquettes, another called al-Jāmiʿ li-Ādāb (8) al-Shaykh wa-l-Sāmiʿ (9).
(1) Manuscript T adds the word “wahuwa” (“and he is”).
(2) He entitled the work Maʿrifat ʿUlum al-Hadith; this title is affirmed by several scholars—among them al-Bayhaqi in al-Sunan al-Saghir 4:206, Ibn al-Salah in Siyanat Sahih Muslim p. 75, and al-Tijibi in his Barnamaj p. 141—and the book is in print.
(3) B reads “al-Asbihani” (with a kasra on the b), while D and a marginal copy of J read “al-Asfahani”; the adopted reading follows A, Z and K.
(4) Its full title is Maʿrifat ʿUlum al-Hadith ʿala Kitab al-Hakim, as cited by al-Samʿani in al-Tahbir fi al-Muʿjam al-Kabir 1:181.
(5) In T and K the name appears as “Abu Bakr al-Khatib,” with the elements transposed.
(6) B has the form “al-Baghdadhi.”
(7) The book’s title is al-Kifaya fi Maʿrifat Usul ʿIlm al-Riwaya; Ibn al-Jawzi uses this title in al-Muntazam 16:130, as does al-Kattani in al-Risala al-Mustatrafa p. 164, and the work is in print.
(8) D reads “li-adab.”
(9) The author calls it so here, but the well-known title is al-Jamiʿ li-Akhlaq al-Rawi wa Adab al-Samiʿ, as found in a copy read to the author and as cited by al-Samʿani, Ibn Khayr al-Ishbili, and the author himself. See Juzʾ fihi Tasmiya ma Warada bihi al-Khatib Dimashq min al-Kutub min Riwayatihi pp. 155–161; Fihrist Ibn Khayr al-Ishbili p. 231; al-Muntazam 16:130; and al-Muʿjam al-Mufahras p. 153. The work is in print.
