• Copy J: “End of Tawdih Nukhbat al-Fikr.” The author—may Allah preserve him—adds: “Annotated by its author Ahmad ibn Ali Ibn Hajar, who completed it at the beginning of Dhu l-Hijjah 818 AH, praising Allah Most High and sending prayers upon His Prophet, our master Muhammad, his family, and his companions. End.” Copying was finished on Wednesday, 23 Jumada al-Akhirah 845 AH. May Allah bless our master Muhammad, his family, and all his companions; praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. Peace. • Copy D: “End of Tawdih Nukhbat al-Fikr.” In its margin: “Collation verified.” After this appears a record of audition by the owner, Nur al-Din al-Jawhari, before the author, together with a request for authorization; it reads: “Praise be to Allah, and peace upon His chosen servants. To proceed: The whole of this book—Tawdih Nukhbat al-Fikr fi Mustalah Ahl al-Athar—has been read to its author, our master, our lord and our shaykh, the Chief Judge, the hadith master of the age, Shaykh al-Islam, the last of the eminent mujtahids, friend of Allah, proof of Islam, Abu al-Fadl Shihab al-Din Ahmad, son of the eminent shaykh, the mufti of the Muslims, Abu al-Hasan Nur al-Din Ali al-Asqalani, widely known as Ibn Hajar—may Allah prolong his life and return to us and to the Muslims the blessings that flow from him, through Muhammad and his family—by the owner of this copy: the virtuous, accomplished, erudite, beneficial, literary preacher Nur al-Din Ali ibn al-Zayni Zayn al-Din Dawud al-Jawhari, Hanafi by school—may Allah make him useful to the Muslims. He read it with study and verification, asking about whatever was obscure and investigating it—may Allah benefit him—over several sessions, as the author himself attested. What is sought, as a charitable favour from our master and lord Shaykh al-Islam just mentioned—may Allah keep him for the Muslims—is that he comfort the heart of the aforesaid reader by authorizing him to transmit this work from him, along with everything else he is permitted to transmit; to teach the said book to anyone who seeks benefit from it; and to share the results of his researches with those who ask. May Allah preserve you and all the Muslims through Muhammad and his family.” After this comes an ijaza from the author to the owner of the copy, Nur al-Din al-Jawhari, written in the hand of Ibn Qamar; it begins: “In the name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Compassionate. May Allah bless our master Muhammad and his family and grant them peace.”
