Nuzhat al-Nazar fi Tawdih Nukhbat al-Fikar - Tahqiq al-QasimIbn Hajar Al-Asqalani

Knowing the Occasion of a Ḥadīth

Another matter of importance is to ascertain the occasion for which a ḥadīth was spoken. One of the teachers of Qāḍī Abū Yaʿlā ibn al-Farrāʾ (1)—the Ḥanbalī jurist—namely Abū Ḥafṣ al-ʿUkbarī (2), authored a treatise on this subject.

Shaykh Taqī al-Dīn Ibn Daqīq al-ʿĪd (3) reports that a scholar of his own era also began compiling such material, but it appears he was unaware of al-ʿUkbarī’s aforementioned work (4).

In fact, books have been written on most of these categories in the manner we have just outlined. These—meaning the types enumerated in this conclusion—

(1) The word “ibn” is absent from T. (2) He is al-Qadi Abu Ya‘la Muhammad ibn al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Baghdadi, known as Ibn al-Farra (d. 458/1066). See: Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala’, 18:89. (3) J reads “al-‘Abkari,” a scribal error; W and T have “al-Akburi,” with the ba vocalized with damma, and this is the reading adopted from H, Ḥ, and K. Al-Laqani states in Qada’ al-Watar, p. 1662: “with damma on the ‘ayn, sukun on the kaf, and fatha on the ba.” Al-Sam‘ani adds in al-Ansab, 9:345: “with damma on the ‘ayn and fatha on the ba—some say damma on the ba as well, but the correct pronunciation is with fatha.” Cf. Yaqut, Mu‘jam al-Buldan, 4:142; the author’s Tabsir al-Muntabih bi-Tahrir al-Mushtabih, 3:1017. The author of Fath al-Bari, 11:86, notes that he never saw the original work of al-Akburi but only an abridgment: “Abu Hafs al-Akburi—one of the teachers of Abu Ya‘la Ibn al-Farra—devoted a monograph to the causes of hadith transmission in the fifth century; I have seen only an abridgment of it.” I have not been able to determine which al-Akburi this refers to. (4) See Ihkam al-Ahkam, 1:62. (5) J again has “al-‘Abkari,” a misreading; W and T read “al-Akburi” with damma on the ba, which is the form adopted from D, H, and K. (6) D vocalizes “al-madhkur” in the nominative, L in the genitive; the other copies omit it. The accusative is preferable, as it functions as an adjective for the construct noun tasnif; nominative or genitive is unlikely here. (7) B alone adds the preposition “min.” (8) The demonstrative “hadhihi” (this) is missing in K.
