Nuzhat al-Nazar fi Tawdih Nukhbat al-Fikar - Tahqiq al-QasimIbn Hajar Al-Asqalani

Another case is ʿAbd Allāh b. Yazīd—with an extra yāʾ added at the beginning of the father’s name (1) and the zāʾ pronounced with a short i (2)—and here too there are several men who bear this name:

Among the Companions are: al-Khaṭmī (4), whose kunyah is Abū Mūsā (5), and whose report is recorded in the two Ṣaḥīḥs (6); and the Qur’an-reciter (7), who is mentioned in the ḥadith of ʿĀʾishah. Some have asserted that the latter is identical with al-Khaṭmī, but this is debatable!

(1) The word “awwal” (first) is missing from manuscript T. (2) Manuscript Z reads “al-maksurah” (with a kasra vowel). (3) Manuscripts W and Z have “wahuma” (and both). (4) Manuscript T gives the nisba as “al-Khutmi” with a ḍamma on the kha, whereas the reading adopted here—supported by J, D, H, Z, Ḥ, L, and M—is “al-Khatmi.” The author states in Taqrib al-Tahdhib, p. 193, that the dotted consonant should be read with a fatha. (5) In J and Ḥ the verb appears as “yukanna” (fatha on the kaf and a doubled nun); the text established on the basis of D, Y, and K differs. Al-Qari, in Sharh Sharh al-Nukhbah (p. 713), remarks that the word may be pronounced either with or without the shadda. (6) Al-Bukhari, no. 811; Muslim, no. 1287. (7) J, Y, and L read “al-qariyy” (with the ya of nisba); B, D, H, W, Ḥ, T, and M have “al-qariʾ” (with a final hamza). A marginal note in Y says: “al-qariyy, with the ya of nisba,” while another copy, bearing al-Biqai’s hand, reads “al-qariʾ” (hamza after the ra). Ibn al-Athir states in Usd al-Ghabah 3/413: “ʿAbd Allah ibn Yazid al-Qariʾ is mentioned in the hadith of ʿAisha. ʿAbd Allah ibn Abi Bakr ibn Ḥazm narrated from ʿAmrah, from ʿAisha: ‘The Prophet ﷺ heard the voice of a reciter and asked, “Whose voice is that?” They replied, “ʿAbd Allah ibn Yazid.” He said, “Allah bless him! He has just reminded me of a verse I had forgotten.”’ Hisham ibn ʿUrwah transmitted a similar report from his father on the authority of ʿAisha, without naming the reciter. Ibn Mandah and Abu Nuʿaym also recorded the report.” See al-Isabah, 4/228. Al-Qari was mistaken in Sharh Sharh al-Nukhbah (p. 713) when he wrote that the form with a doubled ya and no hamza is derived from Qarah, the name of an ancestral figure. In fact, the nisba refers to qurʾan recitation and instruction; its original form ends with a hamza (al-qariʾ). Although dropping the hamza for ease is permissible, doubling the ya as in al-qariyy is not.
